ORIGIN STORIES

Ottawa Singer-Songwriter Leslie Rohonczy Releases Ninth Studio Album ‘Origin Stories’

Ottawa singer-songwriter and producer Leslie Rohonczy has released her ninth studio album, Origin Stories, a twelve-song collection that explores the beginnings that shape a life. Recorded at Soundcreation Studio with longtime collaborators Scott Walsh and Chris Houle, the album blends grounded storytelling with warm folk pop, indie folk colours, melodic rock elements, and rich cinematic production.

Origin Stories traces formative childhood memories, emotional shifts, therapeutic work, and the quiet courage required to move through change. Some songs look back at early life. Others follow the process of unravelling old patterns or rediscovering hope after loss. Together, the album creates a reflective landscape of what it means to step into new chapters.

“This album is about beginnings, and in every life, there are many,” says Rohonczy. “These are universal human experiences. I hope these songs spark listeners to explore their own beginnings in a new way.”

Co-producer and multi-instrumentalist Scott Walsh describes the project as “a journey across many creative textures and spaces,” noting that “we had a wonderful time experimenting with creative production ideas that really serve the emotional tone and message of each track.”

One of the most personal moments on the record appears in the opening track, When My Name Was Gail. The song imagines the first three days of Rohonczy’s life, when her birth mother left the hospital and hid in a friend’s Toronto apartment before being found and persuaded to surrender her for adoption. “I have always wondered what those three days must have been like for her, and for me,” she says. “The song comes from that curiosity and the tenderness of looking back at a beginning I can never fully know.”

Musically, the album moves between intimate, sparse piano pieces and full band arrangements. Listeners will hear layered vocal harmonies, warm guitar work, atmospheric textures, and the grounded rhythmic presence of drummer Chris Houle. The track Where I Belong features lead vocals by Walsh, and the closing track Walk Each Other Home includes a live five-piece string ensemble from the Strings of St. John orchestra.

Standout tracks include When My Name Was Gail, Too Late, Dark Waters, Full Metal Spine, and Big Blue Sky, each capturing a different moment in Rohonczy’s life and creative evolution.

Origin Stories is available on iTunes and all major streaming platforms. A limited number of physical CDs are available directly from the artist.
